Modern American School
A lot of people reach my site by searching for Modern American School (or Escuela Moderna Americana, in Spanish), which is the school where I spent 15 years receiving kinder, primary and secondary education in Mexico City. About two years ago, I started a project to create a website for ex-alumni. However, due to time constraints and other priorities I wasn’t able to finish this project.
Chris Gehringer has step up to this task and set up a new site for MAS alumni, based on his Alumni Channel software. I am the administrator of this site, which has turned out to be quite popular. The URL for this site is: http://masalumni.org.

Yes, the school was located in Colonia del Valle, but it moved to Cerro del Hombre 18, Col. Romero de Terreros a long time ago. It has been in the new location at least since 1980.

yo llevaba 6 años en esa institución pero al final me precionaban mucho para pasar y yo sujiero 2 cosas
1.- que esta escuela sea mas divertida como la miss linda de 2º
2.- y que chequen esta escuela: IMA

Does anybody know why is it that the school has no webpage? I am assuming they have, at least, some type of intranet.
Has anybody heard anything on their rationale not to put up a public webpage?
It seems so strange!

To All:
I wish that we have more response from different generations of MAS
Alumni. I love MAS because it gave me a great education and knowledge to succeed in todays business world. Truthfully, I always questioned my Dad’s insistance for me to go to a Bilingual School.
Now I know his wisdom. I am making it….

Que tal, suena interesante el proyecto. Lo primero seria integrar la red de estudiantes dando mayor difusion tanto a los que estan dentro como fuera de la escuela. Yo estuve en la escuela desde Pre Primaria hasta graduarme del bachillerato y creo que a pesar de lo que se diga, esta institucion nos dio buenas bases para salir adelante en este entorno competitivo. Me gradue de la prepa en 1988 y aun conservo amistades que conoci desde la primaria. Felicidades y ojala no se quede en proyecto nada mas.

Si en efecto la pagina web del MAS, carece de mas información, soy generación 1974, e inicie la escuela desde pre-primaria y termine alli el bachillerato. Uno de nuestros compañeros J. Pablo Rizzardini, se ha hecho cargo desde hace varios años de mantener un directorio actualizado de nuestra generación, te proporciono su correo: jpablo2004@gmail.com. Yo sali en 87. Me parece muy buena idea tener un sitio. De vez en cuando uno le entra a uno la nostalgia y es bueno tener contacto con las personas con las que uno vivio gran parte de su vida.

antes me preguntaba por que mis papas me habian inscrito en esa escuela ahora me doy cuenta que es una super escuela y de hecho mi hija entra el proximo ciclo escolar

Me da mucho gusto que los exalumnos de MAS quieran seguir en contacto. Yo soy bastante mas viejo que algunos de los que escriben aqui, yo me gradue en 1981 y entre en 1968 a la pre-primaria. Dejenme decirles que nuestra querida escuela ha tenido en sus aulas a gente que ahora goza de mucho prestigio, como Pedro Ferriz de Con, Jorge Berry, conocidos por la television y Carlos Elizondo, que ahora es Secretario de la OCDE. Tambien pasaron por sus aulas Fabrizio Mejia, conocido joven escritor, Enrique de la Madrid, ex-diputado federal, Arturo Sarukhan, seguramente proximo embajador en Washington y que se distinguio por ser el vocero de Felipe Calderon aqui en los E.U. No cuestionen porque sus padres los metieron a la MAS, creo que hicieron la mejor eleccion posible. Yo le agradezco a la MAS mi formacion academica, porque aun estando en la Universidad, en mis oidos continuaba escuchando las ensenanzas de la Escuela, y las sigo escuchando.

Hugo, in the list of famous alumni, you forgot to include Julio Frenk, former minister of Health (in Vicente Fox’s administration). On the other hand, I already knew about Pedro Ferriz de Con and Jorge Berry, but had no idea about Carlos Elizondo and Fabrizio MejÃa. By the way, kudos to Arturo Sarukhan, next ambassador to the United States!
And Jorge Juan, if you do have the time to get the website up and running, and since it would be done on your free time, don’t get too fancy. Just keep a database of alumni -not to be published openly on your website, naturally- and a forum to exchange ideas, and that would be pretty much it, I guess.
Are you guys (or as we would say here in Texas, y’all) going to the school’s 55th anniversary celebration next February?

No es tatuaje, pero llevo el sello de la escuela en casi todo lo que hago. Y es que los hijos de MarÃa Vilchis tenemos algo en común que va más allá del bilingüismo, es un modo de ser, de imaginar y de actuar con sentido ético. La caligrafÃa se la debemos muchos a Miss MarÃa Luisa; las expresiones correctas al formidable equipo de maestras de español que tuvimos desde el kinder, y el pensamiento al universo de ideas que nos embullen. Es cierto que habÃa exigencias que en su momento me encrespaban; hoy las agradezco. Sinceramente les digo que es un orgullo saberse egresado de una de las mejores escuelas del paÃs. Por cierto, hablando de celebridades que salieron del MAS, no mencionaron a José Ãngel GurrÃa, aunque hay un buen número de eminencias que no salen en la tele pero que han destacado como empresarios, deportistas, funcionarios de gobierno, artistas, académicos, periodistas, escritores, etcétera. Felicito a quien tomó la iniciativa de abrir esta webpage…

Señores, estoy tratando de reunir argumentos para convencer a la madre de mi hijo a meterlo ahÃ. Donde puedo conseguir datos sobre el ranking actual de MAS u otra información que me sea útil. Les voy a agradecer mucho estos datos por que no basta con decir que a mi me fue muy bien en esa escuela y que mis amigos actuales son los que hice hace 30 años. Saludos

Patricio: En el desayuno del sábado pasado para celebrar los 55 años de la escuela, la directora Cristina Galvéz comentó que la escuela quedó en el primer lugar en el D.F. y en sexto lugar a nivel nacional. Estos resultados son de la Evaluación Nacional de Logro Académico de los Centros Escolares (ENLACE). En la página del Instituto de Fomento e Investigación Educativa puedes ver los resultados. Honestamente me emociona saber que la educación que nos dieron en el MAS es apreciada por muchos de nosotros. En mi vida laboral continuamente evoco los aprendizajes de muchos de nuestros maestos, en especial de la intrañable Mrs Madrid que me hace cuidar mis conjugaciones y mi grámatica en todo momento. Y quien no recuerda las carreras que se organizaban entre ella y Miss Sarukhán?! La Moderna me dejó mucho para aplicar en mi vida personal y profesional. Si, la escuela es estricta, pero saben qué? me dejó preparada para enfrentar el mundo laboral donde su simple mención te abre las puertas por el nivel de inglés, de trabajo y de responsabilidad que nos inculcan. Cuenten conmigo para lo que organicen en el futuro. Pertenezco a la clase del 89.

Hola Alumnos.
My mother-in-law teaches English at MAS and my business is the creation of alumni web sites. I would like to create a free web site for MAS IF there is someone out there (Jorge?) that will run/maintain the site, answer alumni questions, post pictures, post reunion information and monitor the message boards.
If you are interested, please let me know. This would be my first customer outside of the USA so I’m really excited to help if you think my service is something you could use. The key to the service is alumni self-registration and update, email capability by class or entire membership, and security of email addresses at all times.

By the way, my mother-in-law is Ms. Hillefeld and her daughter (my wife) and I get down to Mexico every few years to visit, but they come up to the USA to visit us each summer. Jorge, check your email for some questions I need answered in order to set up the site.

The school was located in Colonia del Valle but moved to Cerro del Hombre (Col. Romero de Terreros) sometime between 1975 and 1980.

The old school has its main entrance on Nicolas San Juan. The acces to kindergarden and gradeschool was on the other side, Gabriel Mancera. The school moved to its current facilities on January 1980. For that we got extended Xmas vacation that year!

Hi all,
Just today I received an email that eventually took me to this blog, which I knew nothing about. It is very interesting to read about old times. I graduated in 1983, and I remember the last day of classes in our old place in Gabriel Mancera/Nicolas San Juan. You should all know that the big letters currently in place in the building facing Cerro del Hombre 18 were originally placed in the building facing Nicolas San Juan. Mrs. Rodriguez allowed the sign to be carried around during the farewell ceremony back in December 1980. I remember crying as we chased the sign around, because the new school building seemed so scary and far away from home…
I still drive past the old school. As I recall, it now is the “Continental School” or something.
I also agree with those of you who praise our years there. I went the whole way, from K1 to high school, and I’ll never regret it. Yes, discipline was TOUGH, and back then I preety much hated it, but now I realize that with discipline came a whole way of looking at life and professionaly it has been key to finding opportunities. So, if you can let your children live the experience, go for it!

Hola a todos, yo estoy ahora mismo en la Moderna Americana… me da gusto leer lo que todos ponen, sobre la escuela y demás…. Me gustaría darles un par de noticias que quizás no todos saben… Sarukhan sigue dando clases, igual que Tobyanne…. ¿alguna vez han pasado por enfrente de la escuela, en Miguel Ángel de Quevedo? Los laboratorios ya los compró la escuela… piensan construir una alberca y demás… ahora es obligatorio el uso del transporte escolar para la mayoría de primaria y secundaria… La mera verdad no se me ocurre nada más, si alguien quiere algo de información que quizá pueda proporcionar contácteme en mi correo, jis.gisela@hotmail.com
