World Cup 2006

For each World Cup I create a spreadsheet to keep track of all the games and be able to make predictions and test what-if scenarios. This year I decided to share these files with all my loyal blog-readers (which according to the latest stats could be better). I am also including the files for France 1998 and Korea-Japan 2002.

The Germany 2006 spreadsheet is empty, and ready to fill out as the soccer matches take place. After registering the final score of each match, it is advisable to press the button called “Ordenar equipos”, which will sort each group, and show the group leaders.

The spreadsheet is ready to handle all matches, and will be completed progressively as the scores are included. There’s another button called “Tabla de Resultados”, which will sort all the teams and rank them appropriately, the results from this ranking can be visualized in a sheet called “Lugares”.

As you may have noticed, the spreadsheet is in Spanish, since most of my visitors come from Mexico or the US, and I know for sure that there’s a much larger percentage of Mexicans interested in following the World Cup.

You will be warned by Excel while opening any of the spreadsheets, since they contain macros, which are essential to keep the teams ordered. Don’t worry, this is normal behavior, you may check the file with an antivirus if you’re a bit paranoic about these things. If you own a Mac like I do, just enjoy the virus-free environment :D.

P.S. I’m an early tester of Google Spreadsheets, and have imported the Germany 2006 sheet there. If you’d like an invitation to collaborate, please leave a comment.

Update (2006-06-23): Now that the groups stage is over, I have updated the Excel spreadsheet for Germany 2006 to include all the scores so far.

Update (2006-06-24): Found and corrected a bug in the determination of quarter-finals. The file has also been updated to reflect today’s results. Sadly Mexico has been eliminated by Argentina :(. Go Spain!

Update (2006-06-27): Seems like the ‘Partidos finales’ sheet was completely wrong, so I have corrected it. Today was the end of the Round of 16 (octavos de final), and I have updated the results accordingly. Spain has been eliminated…. no comments.

Final Update (2006-07-09): Italy won the World Cup. I have made the last update to the file.

Think Spain, Italy and Portugal will be the 3 teams to beat in Euro 2008
